Baby Dave - Gen Z Baby

About...

Isaac Holman, aka Baby Dave, released his debut album ‘Monkey Brain’ in 2022. Holman is also the lead singer and drummer of the punk band Soft Play (previously known as Slaves). As a solo artist, Baby Dave creates alternative and indie music, which is very different to the music created by Soft Play. The track ‘Gen Z Baby’ came into the world, with the rest of the album, as a form of therapy for the solo artist.

Lyrics...

This upbeat song has Holman speaking lyrics about his younger girlfriend who is a part of ‘Gen Z’. Holman includes humorous topics such as how the girlfriend ‘don’t get my references’, to more socially sensitive topics, especially noted in the lyric ‘I told her about my anxieties / I felt a bit silly, but she put me at ease’. This simple-sounding track has great catchy lyrics that feel honest and realistic.

Production...

This track and the rest of the album began as a bedroom project that started on GarageBand. The album was originally viewed by Holman as a collection of demos, but, by entering the recording studio with the Blur and Gorillaz member, Damon Alburn, the album became a more tangible thing. Whilst still keeping the casual, even DIY, feel it originally had.

Summary...

‘Gen Z’ is a relaxed track that is a complete turnaround from anything that had previously been released by Soft Play. This track isn’t hyper-focused on double meanings and metaphors, it allows for the lyrics to feel very realistic. The simplicity of the production also adds to this notion that the album, and this track in particular are highly focused on Holman’s personal life.
