SPRINTS - Heavy

Written by Ben Left (23/1/24)

About...

Hailing from Dublin, Sprints take the best aspects of post-punk and fuse them with the angst of grunge, introspection of indie, anger of punk and feminist defiance of riot grrrl. After five years making a name for themselves, the four-piece made the UK top 20 earlier this month with their debut album Letter to Self, from which ‘Heavy’ is the latest single

Lyrics...

Lyrically the song is simplistic yet powerful, with lead singer and songwriter Karla Chubb tackling anxiety and, as she puts it, “the isolating nature of panic”. “Do you ever feel like the room is heavy/ Like the air is hot and the air is sweaty?” she talk-sings, before her vocal becomes more frantic, matching her admission that she “can’t sleep” and can “barely breathe”

Production...

Produced by Daniel Fox of fellow Irish noise-rockers Gilla Band, the song transitions seamlessly from sounding moody and foreboding- thanks in no small part to a hypnotic Bauhaus-style bassline- to raw and expansive, the scratchy guitars and dual-vocals elevating the chorus a place of untamed catharsis

Summary...

‘Heavy’ is a prime example of what Sprints do best: nervy, vital music which channels oppressive frustration into profound release. With a world-wide tour on the way, you don’t want to miss them!
