Straats are a musical trio based in Toronto, Canada, formed by long time friends Annie Martin, Joel Porter, and Adrian Straatsma. With Annie on the vocals, and produced by Adrian and with guitar and back up vocals by Joel, their second single in 2023 “About You” shows a mastery of their shared passion for music
Lyrics...
With simple and to the point lyrics, Straats manage to capture the nature of longing for something or someone that is no more. The motif of the car that cannot be seen hints at more than just a car, but rather the representation of what has faded away and you cannot see anywhere else but in memories or what is similar to it. Objects are simply physical things, but the memories they trigger are eternal and repetitive, brought each time one looks at them. Straats has managed to grasp this particular trick of nostalgia quite well with their repetitive lyrics which stick to the mind and show how simplicity can reach emotional heights that make you think of a song for more than the time it takes to listen to it
Production...
This track grasps emotions that tug at one’s heartstrings through Annie’s lovely vocals and Joel’s soulful guitar that accompanies her thorough the song. Lulu Prost is on the synth, which manages to make the repetitive magical. Joel’s backing vocals also add to the melancholy of the song, his vocalisation of the interjections through Ben Elder’s tasteful mixing bringing the song to remind the listener of their youth or those they loved, now nothing more than memories that one thinks about more than once

This amazing track is fortnately not a one hit wonder of Straats, who continue releasing new music and have also released another lovely single this year called “Dri Away” which is another amazing song that keeps true to Straat’s nature of making music that connect with their listener
